Bayport Terminal truck driver killed when crane lifts container with truck still attached
In a bizarre industrial accident, a truck driver transporting a cargo container within the Bayport Terminal yard was killed when the container he was hauling was lifted by a crane with his truck still attached, according to a Port of Houston spokeswoman.
The Bayport Terminal, located in southeast Harris County, is one of two public container terminals operated by the Port of Houston.
The accident occurred around 4 a.m. on Friday, according to Lisa Ashley, spokeswoman for the port.
The victim, who was a member of the International Longshoremen’s Association, operated a mule, which is a customized truck that shuttles cargo containers within the terminal yard to and from ships, according to Ashley.

Apparently, when a container the driver was transporting was lifted by the cargo crane, it did not detach from his truck, lifting the truck as well, Ashley said.
“The driver was unfortunately killed because of that action,” Ashley said.
The victim has not been identified. The accident remains under investigation.
