Texas Democrats outpace Republicans in statewide primary turnout
Democratic primary voters narrowly outnumbered their Republican counterparts Tuesday for the first time since 2008, according to unofficial results compiled by the Texas secretary of state’s office.
More than 4 million Texans voted in the March 3 primaries, with 2,076,046 votes cast in the Democratic presidential primary and 2,008,385 cast on the Republican side.
The Democratic turnout, spurred by a contested presidential primary, fell well short of matching the 2.8 million Republicans who turned out for the GOP primary in 2016, which involved Donald Trump, Republican Sen. Ted Cruz and others. Republicans also cast far more primary ballots this year than Democrats did in 2012, their recent primary under a Democratic president.
Historically, turnout has not served as a reliable signal of general election outcomes. In 2016, Harris County Republicans outnumbered Democrats during their respective primaries, before Democrats swept every statewide office in November. And in 2008, Democrats more than doubled Republicans’ primary turnout and lost handily statewide in November.
The unofficial statewide turnout of 4,084,431 represented 25 percent of the more than 16 million registered voters in Texas.
The 2020 primary totals were unofficial, as counties were still tallying mail ballots and certifying provisional ballots through Saturday.
In Harris County, 321,903 people voted in the Democratic presidential primary, compared to 192,985 on the Republican side, according to unofficial results from the county clerk’s office.
