Amazing and horrifying creatures that live in the Gulf of Mexico

When you take a dip in the Gulf of Mexico, be aware that you’re sharing the water with these guys.

Sometimes these strange aquatic creatures are discovered by scientists with organizations like the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Ocean Exploration Trust, led by Dr. Robert Ballard, the man who discovered the Titanic wreck.

FISHING IN THE CITY? Here’s what you could catch in Houston’s Brays Bayou

In 2010, the NOAA discovered what they eventually named the American Pocket Shark, an animal less than 6 inches long that glows in the dark.

Other times, a strange and terrifying discovery is hauled up from the depths by an unsuspecting fisherman, as was the case with the goblin shark above, which was accidentally caught in a shrimp net off Key West.

What’s even more amazing is the thought of more creatures yet to be discovered. Take a look at the photos above to see what lurks in the depths of the Gulf.
