On the front lines: Vintage photos of Houston nurses show what it means to be a hospital hero
It takes a special person to become a nurse. It’s a tough job with demanding hours, stressful life or death situations and offers little to no recognition.
The novel coronavirus pandemic has reminded us just how important these people are. Nurses across the Houston region are putting their lives at risk every day to help heal infected patients from the deadly disease. Most are at even higher risk now that dwindling personal protective equipment (PPE) across the country has forced some to re-use face masks or get creative with swim goggles and raincoats as a means to protect themselves.
ON HOUSTONCHRONICLE.COM: Houston ER nurse lacking proper protection is now fighting for his life
In honor of the true heroes of the pandemic, Chron.com compiled vintage photos of Houston nurses that date back as far as the 1950s. In some of these shots, local nurses can be seen helping policemen and city detectives recover from near-fatal injuries, while others can be seen administering the first polio vaccines and swine flu vaccines.
Considering Houston is home to the Texas Medical Center, the largest medical complex in the world, it should come as no surprise that nurses make up a large proportion of the working population here. During such difficult times, it’s important to remember these everyday hospital heroes – the ones that are working today to help flatten the curve, and the ones from our past that helped shape the health of Houston.
Click through the photos above for a look back at Houston’s nurses over the years…
