Puppies saved from north Houston house fire

Houston firefighters saved more than a dozen puppies and other pets from a roaring house fire Thursday morning in north Houston

The pups were inside a home on the 400 block of Melbourne that caught fire around 11:30 a.m. Flames and smoke poured into the air from the home, which firefighters and neighbors said contained hoarder conditions.

Firefighters spend more than an hour putting the flames out because of the conditions inside the home. They immediately began pulling the dogs out of the burning house.

Paramedics gave the puppies oxygen through a special mask designed for animals found in fires, according to Houston Fire Department District Chief Kevin Carley. All of the pups who were pulled out survived, while a handful of other animals – including dogs and birds – died in the fire.

A man who was inside the home as it caught fire made it out safely, Carley said. He suffered minor burns but refused to be taken to the hospital.

Two firefighters were injured when they tripped over the tightly packed items in the house. Both suffered minor injuries, Carley said.

Arson investigators are working to determine what sparked the blaze.
