Buzz Aldrin tweets tribute to Apollo 11 on 51st anniversary of liftoff

This week marks 51 years since the Apollo 11 moon mission which landed humans on the moon for the first time. On July 16, 1969, Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin, Neil Armstrong and Michael Collins lifted off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Four days later, Collins orbited the moon in the command module, while Armstrong and Aldrin became the first humans to set foot on the lunar surface after landing Apollo 11’s lunar module, Eagle, on the Moon’s Sea of Tranquility.

Aldrin, 90, tweeted a tribute to the historic lunar mission Thursday.

Today represents a truly important day in the history of humankind – we lifted off from Earth on #Apollo11 to a place of Magnificent Desolation – the Moon. It was the journey of a lifetime, a mission of eternal consequence for science, exploration, and human achievement. pic.twitter.com/m9g3aR25Q9

An estimated 650 million people watched Armstrong’s televised image as he took “… one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.”

The lunar landing paved the way for future space exploration.

In April, Aldrin said his post-Apollo 11 quarantine experience applies to the coronavirus pandemic.

Among the lessons he learned was the importance laughter. He also emphasized that “life is not always lived at light speed.”

“Faced with frustration, restraint, stress, adversity, and boredom, laughter helps,” Aldrin told Florida Today.

“Slowing down” allows time to reflect and consider how best to move forward, Aldrin said. “That kind of pause is seldom voluntarily but can be a well-disguised blessing.”
