HISD to reopen its curbside summer meals program
As the coronavirus pandemic threatens free school lunch programs for low-income students in Houston Independent School District (HISD), the district has formed a plan to help.
The more than 80 percent of students who qualify for free and reduced-price lunch in Texas’ largest school district are impacted by the delay of the 2020-2021 school start date, pushed back to September 8. Also a factor, classes will be available online only for the first six weeks of school.
RECONNECT SAFELY / RETURN STRONG: #HISD’s reopening plan has launched! All students will begin the school year virtually on Sept. 8! “During the first weeks of virtual learning from Sept. 8 to Oct. 16, curbside meals will be provided at select schools of 60 percent or more of free and reduced lunches,” interim superintendent for HISD Grenita Lathan said in a press conference.
The sites will be open every Monday and Thursday through Aug. 31, according to HISD.
