Trump credits himself for creating, ‘saving’ the oil industry in Texas

With the oil and energy industry still reeling from the pandemic, President Donald Trump claimed during a Monday roundtable discussion at the White House that he “saved” and “created” the oil industry in Texas.

“I saved the oil industry, two months ago I saved the oil industry,” Trump said. “I created it, it became number one, we have millions of jobs and we saved it so Texas is not going to have to let go of millions of millions of people.”

The president called recent polls between himself and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden “fake news, phony-polls, same thing,” and said his move to “save” the oil industry has him higher in the polls than what is being reported.

“We are doing well in Texas,” Trump said. “We would have had millions of people out of work, I saved it, and then they say I am leading by one point in Texas?”

The president did not elaborate on how he saved or created the industry, which is currently facing one of the biggest challenges since the 19th century due to slowing petroleum demand from the pandemic, according to a recent report from the U.K. financial services firm Deloitte.

Political analysts, reporters and the general public had plenty to say after he claimed to have created the oil industry in Texas:

Donald Trump said that he created the oil industry in #Texas.

I don’t care what your fricking politics are but we should be able to agree – in #Texas & in #Houston, the Energy Capital of the world, that Donald J. Trump did NOT create the oil industry in our state! Can we agree on that? Please… #alternativefacts https://t.co/gpvRe5HEwW

Trump just saying things: “I saved the oil industry. Two months ago, I saved the oil industry. I created it. We became #1. We have millions of jobs. And we saved it.”

For those who need to brush up on their Texas history, the oil industry started here more than a century ago (before Trump was born.)
