Houston News : Checking in with a Texas doomsday prepper ahead of the election

As Election Day looms closer, what’s unsettling to a few Texans is the prospect of civil unrest that may unfold after the ballots are cast. Amid the pandemic and the turmoil before Election Day, the environment of uncertainty is Code Red for some Texas doomsday preppers.

Chron spoke to a Texas business owner who provided a glimpse into the world of doomsday preppers. Atlas Survival Shelters owner Ron Hubbard, who is based in Sulphur Springs, Texas, shared his insights about the build up before Election Day.

Chron: What are some Texans telling you about their fears and preparation ahead of Election Day? Has business picked up in recent weeks?

Hubbard: Most Americans believe that we’re headed to a civil war. Everyday, I get between five and 10 customers calling.

Those who did not prepare are going to be walking around like zombies, looking for food and water and might get shot. Complete chaos will ensue. People will be fighting over food, supplies, and medicine. It’ll be something out of a movie. Let’s hope it never happens, but the odds of it happening are about 100 percent.

Are COVID-19 concerns driving the need to bunker down?

Hubbard: They’re not getting the bunkers because of COVID-19. They’re getting bunkers for the future because things look really shady.

A model of an underground bunker.

Ron HubbardSo, what’s the first step, the plan B for Americans who are prepping for the potential of unrest post-election?

Hubbard: If it breaks out into civil war, people just want a place to get the hell out of dodge. They just want a place to ride the storm out. They want to protect their family and they want to get them out of harm’s way. They are some of the nicest, most educated, elite people, and they’re preparing for that bad day. They think that day could be as soon as January, December.

You hunkered down in a bunker near Victoria, Texas around the time of the Mayan calendar’s end on Dec. 21, 2012. What’s the experience like bunkering down in one of these underground escapes?

Hubbard: Boring. You’re watching old episodes of “Two and Half Men.” You have cameras so the monitors are your windows outside. It’s like being stuck in a hotel room without going past the hallway for ice.

A room in a bunker.

Ron HubbardWhat if you don’t have the cash to build a bunker right now? What are some survival tips to stay prepared?

Hubbard: I would get long-term survival food, and you’ve got a way to purify water. People need to have a real book on survival and on how to do things because the internet will be down.

What are your personal fears leading up to Election Day?

Hubbard: It is scary. I would rather be a poor man in safe country with peace and love than be a wealthy man in a country that’s gonna fall apart where money won’t mean nothing. The only thing that will mean something is water, food and fuel.
