Houston News : Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo announces plans for 2021 Livestock Show

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, the Rodeo will forego its adult-oriented Open Show and focus on its youth programming.

“Our efforts will be focused on providing a safe experience for our Junior Show exhibitors in 2021, which aligns with our mission of promoting agriculture and supporting Texas youth,” Rodeo President and CEO Chris Boleman said in the release. “Our Open Show exhibitors are an integral part of our show every year, and this decision was not made lightly, but with the health and safety of all our exhibitors and guests at the forefront of our decision.”

While the Rodeo has not finalized COVID-19 health and safety protocols for Junior Show exhibitors, it confirmed it will limit the number of on-site participants and spread out events over a longer period of time.

In 2020, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, the city’s largest annual event, pushed forward with its 20-day slate of events until a positive coronavirus case from community spread was recorded.

For 2021, livestock entries for the Junior Show are scheduled for Nov. 15 to Dec. 15. The roster of competitions includes breeding beef heifers, breeding sheep, dairy cattle, and market lambs.

The Rodeo will also hold several contests and judging competitions, including archery, industrial craft and young guns shooting sports. Virtual events range from an agriculture science fair to a public speaking contest.

Youth competitions include meat pen rabbits, breeding rabbit/cavy, and llama and alpaca shows.

“While our 2021 Livestock Show might look different amidst COVID-19, we are optimistic that we will be able to welcome back our Open Show exhibitors to the Rodeo grounds in 2022, and give them the experience that they deserve and expect at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo,” Boleman said in the release.

The 2021 Rodeo is scheduled for March 2-21.

Additional plans for the 2021 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, as well as full health and safety guidelines, will be announced late 2020.
